Impact of the Snow

It’s a beautiful, sunny day as the sun bounces off the 15-18 inches of snow. I must admit that even I, a warm weather person, appreciate the beauty of the snow. I still can’t get out of my driveway and no generous soul has come by to clear it. A few years ago the teenager across the street was always on our front stoop offering to clear our driveway and walkway. But he is an adult now and does not need to or want to do it. Hopefully Mother Nature will be generous over the next few days and begin melting the snow. I have used the time wisely – decorating, cleaning, working on projects, etc. I have no urgent need to go out. The snow has also helped with my weight loss. Hubby & I were scheduled to attend two parties today and one tomorrow. Both cancelled. So I am banking calories for Christmas day.

I am anxious to see my 2 daughters and 2 grands who are scheduled to arrive Christmas Eve night and a childhood cousin (and best friend), scheduled to arrive that morning. Mother Nature, please be nice to us! Big family plans beginning with Lambert Family traditional Christmas brunch after which my household will have 12 people for dinner and 15 people for dinner on Sat. Sun. will be family visiting day when we go to the country where my cousin and I grew up to visit family still there. I am excited!

Snow! Snow! Snow!

Let it snow! No shopping to do will just stay in to decorate the tree and house and finish cards. Hubby & I completed all outside activities yesterday in anticipation of snow (much less I may add). Went to see Precious yesterday and when we came out of the theater there was at least an inch of snow. After snowing all night on our deck is at least 15-18 inches. Great acting in Precious but when I was growing up I didn't know any grandmothers that would have tolerated such treatment from her daughter or mistreatment of her granddaughter.

As we entered the house after the movie, the phone was ringing. It was a neighbor who told us they had planned a Christmas party, expecting about 30 people. Because of the storm most had cancelled so they asked us to come over to help eat all the food. It was great fun celebrating some holiday cheer with neighbors whom we only casually talk to when in the yard. About 12 people showed up. Interesting what can bring people together.

The Stay-At-Home Dad

I spend quite a bit of time on planes and waiting in airports so I have the opportunity to interact with a number of people. Those opportunities will increase over the next few months as I begin my book tour.

Recently on a flight from Atlanta to Richmond, I sat next to a lady who was traveling from Denver to Richmond because her job was transferring her. She initiated a conversation that became more interesting as we talked. She was traveling with her cat. I asked if it was just her and her cat and she informed me that she had a husband and two girls who would be joining her the following week. I sat thinking to myself. Since she is being transferred I assume her husband is either being transferred or will be looking for a job. I finally asked her “Is your husband being transferred or will he be looking for a job?” Her answer was priceless: “My husband has been a stay-at-home-dad for six years.” I was so impressed as I informed her that when my children were small that would have been taboo. She said that sometimes her husband does get the strange questions such as “When are you going to get a real job?” The response to that is he has a real job of taking care of his children and household. I would give him the title of Chief Household Officer (CHO) – a very important job which has been held by women for years.

She felt her husband had done a wonderful job over the years and she was very proud of him. It was a decision that they discussed in detail and arrived at based on what was best for the family. I would venture to say, however, that it takes a man who is very secure with himself to undertake that role. Though there has been progress, society has not fully embraced it. There are still those questions, both asked and unasked. It is my hope that more men will undertake that role when it is in the best interest of the family. Are that many more of you out there? I welcome comments.

An Inspiring Event

Yesterday I attended a holiday breakfast sponsored by the Manasota branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (www.asalh.org). It was an inspiring event attended by approximately 250 people. This organization is credited with founding Black History Month.

In addition to seeing old friends and meeting new ones, a member gave an informative presentation on a project a committee had been working on for two years: a film depicting the experiences of African American veterans living in the Sarasota, FL area. Although it is common knowledge that discrimination existed even in the military, it was disheartening to hear the stories of men and women who were willing to give their lives for the protection of their country while facing such discrimination. We owe them gratitude than can never be paid.

I Continue to be Thankful

In my last posting I talked about being thankful and writing that article made me more aware of all the “small” things I may overlook as I busily go about my daily activities.

As I prepare to leave Sarasota, FL to return to VA for the holidays, I am trying to spend as much time as I can enjoying the weather, playing golf and spending time with friends before leaving. I am also getting in some work – finalizing plans for my book tour, compiling my database and trying to keep up with my social media. I am thankful to have those choices.

Over the weekend I spent some quality time with Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, and her sister Jackie Woods over coffee at Starbucks. Cathy wrote the foreword for my book and we discussed plans for promotion after the book is released in January. I got in a few rounds of golf with my husband (yes, we enjoy playing together), my cousin who lives in St. Petersburg, FL about 30 miles away, a friend from DC who is moving to FL and the ladies league at the club where I belong. I still have a couple of lunches with friends but not sure I can squeeze in any more golf.

Thankful

With Thanksgiving approaching, many people are running around preparing for the “big dinner” whether they are staying home or traveling. Even in this time of economic uncertainty, we all have many things for which to be thankful – if we only took time to think about it.

This resonated with me over the last week after comments made to me by two people. One person was a young lady I have mentored for a few years and the other was my sister-in-law. The young lady sent me an email listing the dates for each day for a week leading up to Thanksgiving Day with instructions to: “list under each day things for which you are thankful, even the small things". Any idea how long that list could be?

My sister-in-law was telling me about a night when she had trouble going to sleep. She would usually count sheep or get up and work on the computer or do some other activity to cause her to get sleepy. This particular night, she decided to count her blessings. After starting to do this she really could not go to sleep because she had difficulty completing the list. That reminded me of a song I used to hear as a child:

When I am worried and I can’t sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings….

What are you thankful today and every day?

Red Pump Nation Women's Expo

Who would think that a group of women dressed in high, medium or low-heel red pumps could have such an impact on each other? That is exactly what happened at the first annual conference of the Red Pump Nation held in Richmond, VA. This conference is the result of a vision by Rev. Tanya Jones to establish an organization of business and professional Christian women to inspire, motivate and empower women to pursue their destiny. The theme “The Time is Now” brought together enthusiastic women from a variety of backgrounds – from doctors to those who are unemployed. They rubbed shoulders together as they listened to speakers and discussed their uniqueness as women.

Speakers delivered empowering messages on such topics as: It’s Time to Tell Your Story - encouraging those who have the desire to put their stories into a book for either their own personal use or for the public; It’s Time to Start Your Business – for those who may have thought of starting a business but fearful of making that uncertain move; It’s Time to Keep Believing – for those who have had so many misfortunes that they want to give up on life; and It’s Time to Take Care of Yourself – impressing upon the women that though we are usually known as nurturers, it very important to take care of ourselves.

A highlight of the conference was the first Red Pump Award, a beautiful engraved, glass, high-heeled red pump. The recipient was an eighty-eight year old woman who in her late seventies started The Neighborhood Assistance Program. She saw a growing need in her community for families needing assistance with food service. The need was so great it expanded to include household items. To keep inventory available for the program, she travels around the city and approaches supermarkets and other outlets to get the items she needs to serve her community. In addition to this community project she still serves as musician for two church choirs in the area. What a magnificent spirit of giving this woman demonstrates. There is a lesson here for the young and old.

Say You're One of Them

Being selected for Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club is the dream of a lifetime for any author. Uwem Akpan, a Jesuit priest from Nigeria, realized that dream when his book of short stories, “Say You’re One of Them”, was selected for her Book Club. Though written as fiction, it reflects experiences that are real for many children in Africa.

Oprah adopted a new approach to the book club for this selection. In collaboration with CNN, represented by Anderson Cooper, the entire world was able to participate through a live webcast. The author appeared to discuss his stories and how he developed each of them. Participants were able to submit questions and some were chosen to appear on the telecast. In addition, Anderson Cooper showed films of the research done on trips made to various parts of Africa by him and other reporters. It was a touching experience to be a part of this webcast.

One of the things uppermost in the author’s mind was how normal it is for children in Africa to sniff glue. Many are given the glue by their parents. He made the comparison to the large number of children in America who also sniff glue. The difference, he pointed out, is that the children in Africa do so to mask their hunger. If they are high they won’t realize that they are hungry. In America, young people sniff glue to get high, just for the pleasure.

A question he could not reconcile in his mind is why so many youngsters in America fail to capitalize on the many opportunities they have while those in Africa will go through unthinkable struggles to take advantage of the limited opportunities available to them.

For America, so much talent is being wasted as we continue to lose our position of strength around the world. How do we stop the bleeding?

Mentorship

As a young student at Howard University in the early 60”s, not sure of what I wanted to study, I was intrigued by the description of a course: Introduction to Business. I signed up. Little did I realize then but that one decision changed the course of my life. Not only did it help me decide my major field of study but it connected me with a very important person who became my mentor - the professor who taught the course.

I define a mentor as “someone who has checked out the minefield and can point out the mines before you step on them”. Mentor relationships can be formal or informal depending on the needs of the persons involved. In my case it was informal –no hard, fast rules. A true mentor helps in guiding your development, but not for personal gain. You can choose a mentor or someone may choose you (with your approval, of course) because they see a need that you may not recognize. In my case, the professor chose me though I’m not sure what he saw missing in my development. My guess is that he saw me as a “fish out of water” an older freshman student (22 versus 18) trying to find my way in an environment which was totally new to me. He helped guide me in the selection of my courses, hired me as his student assistant and influenced me to pursue my graduate study at none other than the Harvard Business School. During the course of a career, a person may have multiple mentors at different stages as the career develops and changes. As you experience changes and growth in your career don’t be reluctant to seek out a mentor if no one seeks you out. Most people are honored to be asked for guidance. If you do have a mentor, be sure you pass it forward by becoming one yourself.

Down Memory Lane

Descending on the sprawling campus of the Harvard Business School with its majestic setting, to attend my fortieth class reunion, I reminisced of my first venture on that hallowed campus – somewhat frightened, not sure what to expect and at the same time anxious to start a new chapter in my life. It is now Oct 2009 and I return with great confidence as I enter the relatively new Spangler auditorium to hear a lecture, “Who Killed Healthcare and the Current Public Policy Options” by HBS Professor. Regina E. Herzlinger.

What a difference from 1968, when sitting in the classroom, I sometimes trembled with fear at the prospect of being called on by the professor to start discussion of the assigned case study. No possibility of that happening today.

I must say I made the decision to attend the reunion with some trepidation. From the registration list I knew only two of the seventeen women from my class year were attending and none of the African American graduates. But I calmly told myself “You’ve been in that situation many times over the years”. Our host hotel the old-line Charles Hotel in Harvard Square was the location for receptions, class dinners and the gala. Over the year classmates had mellowed and egos had diminished.

On the day of departure, I ventured out of the hotel, a few blocks down the street to visit my living quarters in 1967-1969 – Radcliffe Graduate Dormitory, 6 Ash Street, Cambridge, MA. The three-story, brick rectangular building, about one-half mile from the business school, was home to graduate female students from the various Harvard schools. Women were not admitted to the business school until 1963 and by 1967 dorms were still not coed. How well do I remember those cold, cold walks across the bridge to class dressed in my business attire. It was with mixed feeling that I stood outside that building on this overcast, drizzling day and thought of those days forty years ago – some pleasant and some not-so-pleasant memories. Bearing in mind that this was a central part of my two-year experience at Harvard, my husband took a photo of me standing on the steps of the front entrance. Emotions of excitement, sadness and calm overcame me as I slowly walked back to the hotel to leave for my return home. Forty years, it was hard to believe!

Class Reunion

I leave on Oct 1 for Boston where I will attend the 40th class reunion of my graduation from Harvard Business School. Those years seemed to have gone by so fast. I attended the 35th and it was lots of fun. I'm looking forward to this one being as good or better. Will also be able to attend the board meeting of the Harvard Business School African American Alumni Association and a reception it will sponsor for those who have returned for the various reunion years. I'll report back next week.

Trying Something Different

It is so hard to get out of one's comfort zone. At the suggestion and insistence of a friend, I had a "Gold Party". What's a gold party? Friends are invited to your home where a dealer pays cash for unwanted or unused gold. My friends came with single earrings, mangled bracelets and necklaces and other gold pieces they no longer wanted or found useful. I served wine and cheese. The women came and went at will and from 3-6 PM we laughed, talked, drank wine and compared notes on our discovered treasures. It was great fun. I must admit, however, I was very reluctant to host the party but am glad I did.

Health Care

Whatever your feeling about the President or the government involvement or lack thereof in the final health care plan, it's hard to understand why so many people are opposed to health care reform. As a senior, it saddens me to see so many older people who cannot receive the type of care they need. Just as unfortunate, there are so many people, of all ages, who cannot afford the care they need. The status quo would be a mistake.

Congressman Wilson's remarks were disrespectful but apparently represented his true feelings. He clearly stated that he apologized because the republican leadership told him he should do so. He never stated he apologized because he thought it was the right thing to do. There is a difference.

New York Trip

There is no place hotter than NY with temps in the upper 90's. Nevertheless I had a great weekend with my daughters and grands. Taking my 3-year-old granddaughter to the movies and to tap dance class was a real treat. My oldest daughter did her first performance of her new dance company, Roots In Revolution http://www.rootsandrevolution.com/ at a dance studio in Manhattan. It was a great experience for her and 4 other relatively new companies. She did not dance but choreographed a selection she developed that was performed by 3 of her dancers. After the performance, the audience, most of whom were with dance companies or involved with dancing, were able to ask question and give feed back to all the choreographers. Even I learned a lot about dance.

Family Reunion

What a great weekend! Our family had its 22nd bi-annual family reunion Aug 7-9,2009. Originally this reunion was to have been a cruise but many had to cancel because of their financial situation. The committee regrouped and decided to return to our "roots" in Powhatan, VA. About 150 people attended, ages ranging from 2 months old to 80 something. On Friday evening for our family reflections I was asked to speak on "The Value of Family". On Saturday there was an all-day picnic with lots of food, swimming, board games , outdoor games and many opportunities to talk and meet new family members. The need to cancel the cruise may have been a "blessing in disguise". We focused on the purpose of our reunions and how to be sure we remember our roots.

If your family has reunions and you do not attend, you are missing a great experience!

A Fun Weekend

I attended an interesting but unusual affair on Sat. My sister-in-law invited me to her women's club Garden Tea. It was held in the beautifully-landscaped back yard of her home. Tents were set up to shield against the sun, tables were beautifully decorated, each with different color linen and floral arrangements- yellow, lavender, green & pink. We were served 3 courses including such things as scones, tea sandwiches, mini desserts and more.

The interesting part was the required dress. Everyone had to wear sundresses (or other summer dress), hats and gloves. The dress not a problem, but I can't remember the last time I wore gloves. Matter of fact I did not own a pair. I do own one summer hat which I had not worn until a month ago when I attended another affair that required a hat. I must say, in this age of casual attire, it felt good to dress up for the afternoon.

Good News

I received some very exciting news today. My publisher, John Wiley and Sons, informed me that my book, The Road to Someplace Better: From the Segregated South to Harvard Business School and Beyond, has been selected for a Global Rights Department license by Audible. This will be a verbatim unabridged reading of the book by a professional actor/narrator with production values comparable to a CD edition. It will be available for download on Audible.com, iTunes and Amazon. I'm thankful that things are moving in the right direction.

Back from Pinehurst

Had a wonderful 3 days in Pinehurst, NC. Played golf every day. The weather was beautiful and the courses very scenic. I played reasonably well but it did not matter, just being on the course was great. For a while I was sad when I thought I'd miss seeing Tiger Woods sail to victory on Sun. at the British Open. But Tiger had other ideas, he did not make the cut! Most unusual for Tiger, but he is human. I'm still a die hard Tiger fan and he will return. Sorry Tom Wason did not win. It would have been great to see a 59 yr. old win if Tiger could not. Oh well enough golf. Back to work on Mon.

The Hope Bus Tour

Had a meeting with Helena Nyman, Ambassador of The Hope Bus Tour - a tour that goes from Boston to Miami over a 3-month period. The mission of the tour is to initiate hope and encourage people to reach out to the community by teaching them how being of service can make a difference - regardless of race, age or social status! I will be one of the speakers on the tour. Will join them in NY, Boston, Atlanta, Orlando, Ft, Lauderdale and Miami. Check out the website: http://www.thehopebus.org/. Will keep you posted.

Monday, July 13, 2009

Had a conference call with my literary agent to being her up to day on the book production. She encouraged me to ask questions about anything. She will intercede with the publisher. Believe me, I will ask questions. I am not at all bashful about that. The only "dumb" question is the one that does not get asked.

Recognizing Opportunities

We are given opportunities every day but we don't always recognize them as such. That happened to me yesterday. A friend who is a member of a Kiwanis club called me about 6 PM and asked if I would be the speaker for his club the following morning at their breakfast meeting at 7 AM. He had been traveling and forgot he was supposed to secure a speaker.

My immediate response was "No, I can't do that! It's such short notice and what will I talk about?" His response, "Talk about yourself. But you are free to say no". I said no and hung up. After hanging up I thought, this could be a change to talk about my experiences and promote my book. I called him back and told him I would do it. I pulled together information from a previous speech and prepared a 15-minute presentation. It was a wonderful experience. Feedback was very positive.I saw people I knew, people who knew some of the same people that I knew and met new people. I was told they would invite me back to do a book signing after my book comes out in Jan. Next time I'll try to see the opportunity before giving a hasty answer. A new group of people heard me speak which could lead to other engagements.

Staying Fit & Healthy

We all want to be healthy and fit, but are we willing to do what is necessary to maintain those goals? I'm committed to both. Every year in late June or early July, I go thru the ritual of my physical exam with all the related tests - electrocardiogram, mammogram (extremely important for women over 40)and blood work. Today was the day for that. Is it a pleasant process? Not necessarily However, I have a wonderful doctor with great bedside manners who honors her appointments and does not keep me waiting. I appreciate that because I think my time is as valuable as hers. So if you have not had your physical or scheduled one,do so.

My day ended with an enjoyable round of golf with my husband.

Missing in Action

Its been a few days since I posted but I have not been AWOL. The last 10 days have had me involved in final edits of The Road to Someplace Better. Final edits were sent to the publisher June 29 and expected back mid August. The cover has been finalized. Galleys are due in Sept. Much work is now underway for marketing and promotion. I have established a team in different locations and we have lots to do. It is very exciting.

Looking forward to a relaxing 4th holiday.

Got on my Traveling Shoes

I head out today for Washington DC for lunch with a friend who owns a communication company and before starting my book tour she will work with me to prepare for it. Then in the evening I will attend the annual meeting of the Leadership Washington Program - of which I was a graduate in 1998. Looking forward to rekindling relationships with friends and colleagues from those days. Then to Bowie, MD to stay overnight with my niece.

Tuesday I travel to Ellicott City, MD (near Baltimore) to play in a olf tournament for MD/DC Supplier Development council, an organization thru which I received many contracts when I had my business. Again, I'll have the chance to reconnect with friends and colleagues. Afterwards, back to Richmond and serious work. I'm looking forward to these trips.

I'm Back

I've been a little slack over the last few days. My-co-author and I have been busy reviewing the final edits from the publisher. Our last chance for changes before it costs me. The title has been finalized "The Road to Someplace Better: From the Segregated South to Harvard Business School and Beyond" and the cover has been approved. The marketing process has begun and initial response is quite positive. My marketing plan has been submitted to the published and we will review with the editor in a couple of days. Stay tuned.

Moving ahead

Yesterday my co-author and I began working of the edits of the manuscript which has been returned from the copy editor. Thankfully, the edits do not require major changes. I have been shown the book cover and am pleased with it. The publisher has changed the subtitle. The title is now, The Road to Someplace Better: From the Segregated South to Harvard Business School and Beyond. For those not familiar with publishing, if you go with a publishing house instead of self publishing, they have final say on the book, title and cover. However, the author does have input. Overall I am pleased the the direction things are going.

Today I will attend the Enterprising Women of Excellence Awards luncheon for the National Association of Women Business Owners, Richmond Chapter. Hope to do a bit of networking.

Powerful Women

The "Uncommon Height" Gala last night in DC had more than 2100 attendees. It was packed. Dr.Dorothy Height is phenomenal! At the age of 97, though physically faille, her mind is sharp. She told story after story with no notes. There is something to be said for continuing to keep the mind active. Oprah was the honoree with both Maya Angelou and Cicely Tyson paying tribute to her.

Today I head back to Richmond. It is raining so we'll have to drive carefully. I'll convince my husband to drive after getting out of DC (he doesn't drive in DC). Then back to work. Lots of things happening. Exciting time. Just had a conversation with the editor at Wiley on the subtitle. Not sure what the final decision (they have final say) will be but think it will be something I'll be happy with. Expect to see the cover design in a few days. Moving forward.

Great Time IN DC

I'm on a(working)mini-vacation in DC. Came to play in a member/guest golf tournament with a friend. This is at least the 5th year we have played. We never win anything but we have so much fun!. Met some new friends - one of the ladies on the team is married to a guy who graduated in my class at Harvard Business School. He knew of me but i did not know him.

After playing in the AM, I did some work in the afternoon. Had a great marketing brainstorm session with my golf buddy. She then took me to a neat independent bookstore where she introduced me to the owner and I told her of my forthcoming book. She expressed an interest in including me as one of the stores events of the month. Tonight I'll be attending the Dr. Dorothy Height Gala. Will tell you about it.

Make it a good day!

It's A Good Day

I feel rejuvenated after returning from my exercise class. It did not take as much effort to get out this morning. Looked forward to it. It'll spend a couple of hours catching up on emails, doing some marketing then meeting a colleague for lunch. This afternoon, my husband and I will try a new golf course not far from our home. That probably means I have to work some tonight but I must be sure to include time for my spouse in my plans. It will be a great day!!!

Doors of Opportunity

You never know from where your opportunities will come. Knowing and meeting people can open many doors if you just step up and walk in.

Had lunch on Friday with another author who offered to introduce me to a colleague of hers who is starting a project that she thought would interest me. She immediately made the introduction by email and I followed up right away. (I like to do immediate followup on a referral for fear of appearing not interested or the possibility of forgeting, even if just to acknowledge receipt of the email.) This lady and I had a meeting this morning and am I interested! Her project is The Hope Bus. The mission and purpose is to bring hope into many people's lives by teaching them life skills and tools to create the life they love - no matter their race, age or social standing. She will do this using a bus (some of us will fly) of volunteers, contacts, speakers and charities touring the East Coast stopping in various cities to deliver the message. I will be with the tour in NY, Boston,MA Annapolis,MD, Norfolk, VA, Orlando, Ft Lauderdale and Miami, FL. This is right down my alley. Exaxtly what I speak to groupsabout. Check the website:
http://www.thehopebus.org.

After my meeting I played a round of golf and had my best score of the year. I was pumped up. What a way to end the day(though I am still working.

Today a Work Day

I must have my holidays confused. I'm working today so I must think it is Labor Day instead of Memorial Day. Oh well, one must do what one has to do. It's very quiet today as I am diligently working on my marketing plan. Preparing to launch my book is getting more exciting as I talk to other authors who willingly share with me their experiences and information . Think I'll work only part of the day. Stay tuned.

Stretching the Body, Mind & Soul

I have just returned from my exercise class with the seniors exercise ministry at my church. They meet every MWF at 8 am. There are days I have to push myself to go but afterward I feel so renewed and refreshed. Anything worth doing requires effort and exercise is no different. This class gives food for the body, mind and soul. Much camaraderie, closing with a pray and hugs. For some people that may be the only hug they get. I am now ready to venture out into the day. Meeting a colleague for lunch to share ideas.

Mon, May 18 was a special day. The Harvard Business School African American Alumni Assn sponsored a Forum at the White House to meet with Pres. Obama's staff who gave us information on the administration's health, education and energy proposed programs. This forum originated with the idea of one person who decided to take action. More forums will be scheduled and each os us will be challenged to become action oriented. What an exciting time!

Recovering

My blog has gotten the short end of the stick. I hit the ground running when I returned from NY. Board meeting at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. all day Thurs with a dinner and reception that evening in honor of the president who is retiring. Attended a great seminar on Friday "1001 Ways to Market Your Book", another reception, dinner that evening, graduation on Sat followed by another reception. My stomach is wondering what happened.

Look forward to an interesting day on Mon when I head to DC for a forum at the White House Complex with alumni from 5 or 6 business schools who will be meeting with some of President Obama's staff to give input on issues facing our county. Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution.

Travels Ending

I've been out of touch for a few days. Now back on track. Had a great weekend in NY with the daughters and grands. No plays, shows, etc, just hung out with them. Good day in central park on Sunday after attending dance rehearsal for the new dance company my daughter started.

I'm now in Riverhead, NY, visiting a childhood cousin who was my best friend growing up in VA. In my book,I talk about her and the summer I spent in Riverhead after graduating from high school. The town has not changed a lot. Headed back to Richmond tomorrow. It's been a good trip.

New York Bound

I am on the train headed for NYC to spend Mother's Day with my two daughters. The train is so much more relaxing than the plane and I can carry as much as I can handle without having to pay extra. Must be sure I take things for the grandkids. First Mother's Day with my daughters since they left home for college, maybe 15+/- years ago. On Mon I will go to Riverhead, NY to spend my birthday (May 12) with my childhood best friend/cousin. Should be great fun.

Had a great day yesterday! Started with breakfast/meeting for River City
Express Network, a group of dynamic women. Had a productive meeting with my website technicians, two really sharp guys from AddisonClark, who are doing some interesting things to upgrade my website. Stay tuned. Later in the day I met with a speaker's bureau, Arnett and Associates. Seems like a great company. I expect to sign with them and put on my traveling shoes for speaking engagements.

I may do some blogging from NYC.

A Full Day

I am looking forward to a great day despite the rain - scheduled to be with us for the next few days. I'm off to a 7:30 breakfast meeting with the women of River City Express Network, a chapter of the American Business Women's Association, to hear Tom Davidson, a great speaker. I will then meet with my website technician to discuss the "bells and whistles" to be added to my website. You'll have to check it out. Later in the day I am meeting with a speaker's bureau to hopefully become one of their clients so I can increase my speaking engagement opportunities. Will keep you posted.

Back on Track

I took a reprieve from blogging over the weekend but I'm back. Today is cloudy and cool in Richmond. Wish I could send some of the rain we have had over the last few days to Sarasota, FL. It is very dry there. Oh, well, I'm not in control.

Today I will continue to make contacts for promoting my book - speaking engagements and book signings. This AM I will visit my ophthalmologist, must keep the eyes properly functioning, then visit my brother who was hospitalized on Sat. He has had a rough year. But God is still good. Have a great day.

Good Publicity

I just got my copy of the May issue of Upscale Magaine. I am part of a featured article "A Woman's Work" p. 60. Check it out.
The radio show on Love Broadcasting went well yesterday. Today has been a hodgepodge of activities. Attended my Kiwanis breakfast meeting (7AM) then to my home office for work. Participated in an informative teleseminar on "Instant Product, Instant Marketing" which talked about how to use Twitter to promote your product. I still must get"acclimated" to Twitter. For the rest of the day I am preparing for a marketing strategy conference call with my editor and publicist.

Get Energized

I don't feel so energetic this AM. Maybe I'm saving my energy for this evening's radio show. Do tune in www.lovebroadcasting.net. After yesterday's beautiful day, today is overcast and a bit cooler. Understand a cold front and rain on the way. I thought I brought sunshine from Sarasota, FL. Oh well, into each life some rain must fall. Whatever the weather, it's good to be alive. Make your day great.

Back in VA

I am back in VA and it's not so bad. The weather is beautiful. I have a bit to do to get back into the routine, unpacking things brought back from FL, opening mail (it's amazing how much junk mail I received that the post officefor just 4 days). I will spend more time on Wed. preparing as guest on an Internet radio show, www.lovebroadcasting.com., from 6-7 PM. Please tune in.

Today is my last full day in Sarasota, FL, flying back to Richmond, VA tomorrow. Lots to do today to close up the condo here. In addition, I must get my final manicure and pedicure. I strongly believe in "be good to myself day". I also have a couple of conference calls to continue work on developing my promotion strategy for the bock. I am continuing to look for speaking engagements for Black History Month and Women's History Month 2010. Also looking for book signings opportunities. Have a great day!

From Swastika to Jim Crow

I saw an interesting firm today,FROM SWASTIKA TO JIM CROW, presented by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. It was the story of many Jewish scholars who came to this country as refugees from Europe and found they could get jobs only in black colleges. They impacted the lives of many of those students.

Great Marketing Ideas

My publicist & I had a great conversation today with Selena Cuffe, the owner of Heritage Link Brands, a company that distributes wine produced by indigenous African vintners and people of African descent. She gave us some great marketing ideas for my book launch. If you want some great South African wines check her website: www.heritagelinkbrands.com.

Circle of Friends

Had a great conference call today with my publicist and a good friend in Richmond, who seems to know everybody. She suggested a concept for my marketing strategy that makes lots of sense. With the "Circle of Friends" concept you identify someone in various organizations/groups who can carry your message at the grassroots level so when you make contact, your name is recognized or when the organization or group has a need that you can fulfill your name comes up. I will be using this to promote my book. Anyone out there who is willing to be in my Circle of Friends?

Making Contacts

I had a great weekend, played golf Sat & Sun but now its back to work, at least until noon. I'll spend the morning contacting friends and acquaintances to tell them about the book and ask for their help in promoting it. In the afternoon, I'll travel to Sun City Center, FL (about 40miles away) to visit a high school schoolmate whom I have not seen since shortly after graduation. Should be an interesting day.

Back to work

After a fun day of having my friends visit from Kissimmee, FL it's back to work today. My co-author, Rosemary Brutico and I will be talking today about persons to target for testimonials and further details about our marketing plan. So much to do and time will pass quickly.

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

I have been busy identifying possible speaking commitments as a part of my marketing plan which is due to the publisher in June. Between the Internet and the library there is so much information available. Today I will take a break. A friend from my college days will be visiting from Kissimmee. FL and bring two couples who are visiting her from Canada. I look forward to an enjoyable day.

Tax Day

Happy income tax day! Have you filed your return? If so you are probably one of those getting or have already gotten a refund. If you got a refund, you loaned your money to the government interest free. If it was a large refund, you could have made a few dollars in interest (even with today's meager rates) if you increased your exemptions, brought home more in your paycheck and invested the extra money. It does take discipline. So check that W-4 at work.

Was it frustrating to gather all that information to get your taxes completed? It's not too late to set up a simple system so you know where your tax information is month-by-month. Well, Apr 15 is here and I expect to get out the checkbook when my accountant gives me the word. Yes, I'm one of those Apr. 15 filers. Why pay early?

Monday, April 13, 2009

I hope everyone had a happy Easter. I did, starting with sunrise service, a round golf with friends, then home to watch The Masters. For a while I thought Tiger Woods would again be the come from behind winner but he lost it near the end. Oh well, he can't win them all.

There are some exciting days ahead for me. Last week my editor, co-author and I had a conference call to discuss marketing and promotion of the book. The book titled, The Road to Someplace Better, A Memoir by the First Black Woman Harvard MBA, will publish Jan 25, 2010. I will spend today gathering information on organizations I want to approach for publicity, book signing and speaking engagements. I will keep the stress under control by maintaining my exercise routine, eating properly and getting enough sleep. I'm off to aerobic dance to start my day.

Happy Resurrection Day. Even in these days of economic uncertainty, be thankful for your many blessings.

A Healthy Mind and Body

Too often we overlook the importance of preventive maintenance for our mind and body. Daily exercise is crucial for a healthy body and pleasant thoughts are good for a healthy mind. So off to the gym I go this morning for my aerobic dance class and I will carry with me pleasant thought . Then back to the drawing board to work on my book promotion

Happy Anniversary to me! (Johnny too) Today is our 10th wedding anniversary.

Thursday, April 9, 2009
